As far as I know there are lots of reputable jeweler in the Philippines that sells good quality jewelry like an engagement ring which is more cheaper than the ones in the US.

Depends how well you know your diamonds. If you know what to look for (clarity, cut, etc) then the Philippines is the way to go. There are some fantastic jewelers and the price will be smaller than the US. If you know little about diamonds, go with a reputable jeweler in the states (one of the big ones) as you will get what you pay for. With independent jewelers (both states and Philippines) there is a chance that you may not get what you pay for. US just has more of the big jewelers.
You better buy here and then when you return to the states with your wife, that’s the time you buy her whatever kind of ring she likes, you can buy without any problem at all.

Forget the ring. Buy something for her family like house and lot. It will mean more to her and she can’t take it to pawn shop.
